FILE PROOFTR

Are WhatsApp photos valid evidence?

Short answer: they can be, but they are easy to challenge. The problem is not the photo itself; it is showing when it was taken and that it has not been changed since.

The three weak points

  1. Compression: when you send a picture as a “photo”, WhatsApp shrinks and re-saves it. The copy the other side receives is not the same file as your original.
  2. Lost metadata: capture date and device details are often stripped on the way.
  3. The message date is not enough: it shows when the message was sent, not that the picture was taken that day and stayed unchanged.

Turning the same photo into strong proof

  1. Shoot with your phone camera and never edit the original.
  2. The same day, get a proof of the original on the File Proof page. The photo never leaves your phone; only its fingerprint is anchored in the Bitcoin blockchain.
  3. Send the picture on WhatsApp as a “Document”, so it is not compressed and the fingerprint stays the same. Attach the small .ots proof file too.
  4. Keep the original, the .ots file and a screenshot of the chat together, with a cloud backup.

You end up with two things: the chat showing the other side was told that day, and an independent time record showing the photo existed that day and has not changed. Anyone can check it for free.

This is not a notarisation or a qualified electronic timestamp; courts weigh it as supporting evidence. It does not prove who took the photo or where. For high-value disputes, also consider an official, court-ordered inspection.
